Get the city straight before building a list

Panama City is the capital of Panama, on the Pacific side of the country. When you search for hotels or attractions, include the country: results for Panama City, Florida can otherwise creep into a travel plan. The historic district, Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo, is also distinct from the archaeological site of Panamá Viejo. Decide which one you mean before sending a driver a destination.

For a first visit, make the historic quarter and the Canal two separate anchors. Then choose whether your remaining time goes to the waterfront, a museum or nature. A long checklist often hides the journey between stops. Our suggested two-day arrangement groups experiences by the kind of day they suit, rather than promising a fixed sightseeing circuit.

Time availableSuggested focusKeep flexible
One full dayCasco Antiguo and one major visit such as MirafloresThe exact order around current Canal information
Two full daysHistoric quarter; Canal; bayfront or AmadorAn indoor alternative to an exposed walk
Three full daysAdd Panamá Viejo, a museum or a separately planned nature outingTravel time and the final airport transfer

Give the historic quarter time on foot

Visit Panamá identifies Casco Antiguo for its historic streets, plazas, museums and restaurants. Use it as a place to explore at walking pace, with time to stop, rather than a short photo interval between transfers. Choose one indoor visit that interests you and leave space for lunch. Confirm opening times directly before making that visit the reason for your day.

If the bayfront is part of the plan, check the route from the exact starting point, the forecast and your group’s needs. Do not judge a walk only by its distance on a map. Carry water and organize breaks. Visitors who need step-free routes should request access details from individual venues; this guide does not certify a continuous accessible walking route.

Visit Miraflores with the operation in mind

The Panama Canal Authority lists Miraflores as a visitor center with viewing areas and an IMAX film included in the ticket. Its page separates ticket-office hours from visitor hours. Check both before leaving and consult current information on ship movements: a visitor-center ticket is not a guarantee that a vessel will pass at the moment you arrive.

Allow for the journey to the center as well as the visit itself. If seeing the Canal is your main priority, avoid squeezing it between an uncertain international arrival and another flight. Check the official ticket page for your visitor category and current arrangements. The Authority identifies an accessible lower viewing platform; confirm any further access needs directly.

Choose your base around the first and last journey

The city has Metro, bus and road transport options, but the right combination depends on where you stay. Use the Metro operator’s map to locate a station, then check the walk from the property entrance. A central hotel can be a good base without being next to the particular attraction you want to visit.

Tocumen and Marcos A. Gelabert in Albrook are different airports; Albrook also names a bus terminal. Read the codes on the next ticket and save the correct destination. For a short stopover, protect the airport return first and fit sightseeing into the remaining window. A calm meal and a historic walk are a better plan than a rushed itinerary built on an unverified transfer time.
