The short version
  • Bocas Town is on Isla Colón
  • Bastimentos has distinct arrival points
  • Price the transfers and meals as well as the room

Choose convenience or time at the property

If you want to arrange activities and choose restaurants as you go, start your search in Bocas Town on Isla Colón. If the accommodation itself is the point of the holiday, compare a more secluded property with its meals and transport included in the calculation. The question is how often you expect to leave, rather than which island has the most attractive photograph.

Visit Panamá separates accommodation on Colón, Carenero and Bastimentos. Those labels are still broad. Ask for the actual arrival dock and the route from that dock to the room. A booking described as “Bastimentos” might place you somewhere quite different from Old Bank, and a listing on Isla Colón does not necessarily put you in Bocas Town.

Treat boat dependence as part of the room

For a stay involving water transfers, ask how you will arrive with luggage, whether a boat is shared or private, who arranges it and what happens if weather changes the plan. Do the same for your departure. A connection to Bocas Town does not automatically include the mainland crossing or a transfer to an airport.

For guests with limited mobility, a dock photo is not enough. Ask about steps, handholds, boarding assistance, the slope or surface between dock and room, and the bathroom itself. For children, request details of life jackets and any rules around the waterfront. We have not inspected individual properties, so accessibility and family facilities need direct confirmation.

Compare a complete day, not just a nightly rate

Put meals, drinking water, transfers and the activities you actually want beside the accommodation total. At a secluded lodge, a meal plan may be useful even if the room initially looks expensive. At a town property, flexible restaurant choices may matter more. Ask about dietary requirements before committing to a stay where meals must be arranged in advance.

Check power, ventilation or air conditioning, internet if essential, luggage storage and check-in arrangements. Overwater does not establish a swimming area, reliable internet or freedom from noise. Ask the host about boat activity and neighboring venues rather than turning one traveler’s account into a guarantee about an entire neighborhood.

Should you split your stay?

A split stay can work when it gives two different experiences: for example, a base for outings followed by time at a particular lodge. It also introduces a packing day and another transfer. For a short visit, compare that lost time with the benefit of the second property. We would keep one base if moving would consume the only flexible day in the itinerary.

Before choosing the final night, work backwards from the onward journey. A remote setting that suits the middle of a holiday may complicate an early departure. Send your host the flight or mainland departure details, confirm the proposed transfer and keep an alternative if conditions interrupt it. Individual hotels will be added only after their services and location have been checked.
